Origins of EAPs
 Why Implement an EAP?
 Benefits of EAPs

Historically, Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) began in the 1940s in the United States2.  Their initial focus was addressing the impact of drinking and substance abuse on job performance.  Over time, this emphasis was extended to other personal issues that affected workplace productivity.

The early 1970s saw a tremendous growth in EAP services.  EAPs began to help employers manage a variety of employee problems.  They proactively addressed workplace issues that could potentially lead to workplace violence, physical and mental health issues, and declining morale among employees.
